As the name states, this artificial island is made out of millions of tons of plastic and other marine debris floating at the water's surface, harming aquatic fauna and flora. 

Plastic packaging makes up most plastic waste found all around the world; however, most of the packaging can only be used once, so after having their job done, they go straight to the trash bin. This situation may seem fine considering how many people recycle their trash, yet the problem here is that sometimes it is just not possible to recycle some plastic waste. Face Mask Heaven - Cucumber and Lemon

Various face masks play a necessary part in our everyday skincare routine. However, the more product we are willing to use and buy, the more plastic trash we accumulate. Therefore, making your organic detoxicating mask at home once a week is a great way to help yourself by helping the planet in the first place.

Peel and crush one decent size cucumber into a puree, add five drops of lemon juice, and stir in one tablespoon of natural honey. Lastly, add several drops of essential oil of your choice (we prefer lavender) and mix until liquified. After preparation, pour the substance into a jar and store it in the fridge. Use within 4-5 days and mix well before each application! Apply the mask onto a clean face avoiding the eye area, leave the mask on for 15-20 minutes and gently remove it using a wet cloth.

While it is a relatively easy homemade skincare recipe to make, mask’s ingredients have many powerful properties, all of which we can pack into one excellent organic and natural product. While cucumbers reduce swelling, puffiness and soothe irritation, lemon juice contains Vitamin C, which may reduce skin damage and has high pH levels, known to decrease skin’s oiliness. Honey is an excellent moisturizer and exfoliator, so all of those ingredients together make a mask we all swear by!

Gorgeous Hair Secret – Shea Butter and Coconut Oil

Shiny and long hair is possibly everyone’s dream to have, yet it is complicated and requires a lot of time to maintain that salon look. Besides, one has to buy a handful of different products to ensure their hair look fabulously, and this, of course, adds up to plenty of plastic waste. Due to this reason, there is no better way to tackle plastic waste than making a nice hair strengthening cream yourself!

Put a cup of shea butter into a bowl, add a little bit of coconut oil, hemp seed oil, and castor oil to the bowl so these three ingredients would make 1/8 of a cup. Carefully blend everything and pour the mixture into a jar and wait a bit for it to solidify. As you can use this amazing cream to both your hair and body, it may not long very last, so do not worry when the cream jar empties.

Quickly being one of our favourites, this cream gorgeously takes care of the hair by strengthening it and adding moisture. Shea butter is known for its non-greasy qualities, while coconut oil helps slow down the hair loss process. Hemp oil is perfect at its job of stimulating hair growth, and castor oil nourish the dry scalp. Mixing up all of these ingredients together, you can create a powerful hair-loving product right in your kitchen!

Breathtaking Smile Magic – Sage, Baking Soda, and Salt

Our smile is often considered our business card or nicest jewellery one can have, but sometimes it feels like a blinding white smile if something only the Hollywood elite can afford. Well, trips to the dentist are often led by huge bills, therefore, stopping people from taking care of their teeth. On the other hand, quality teeth care usually depends on our lifestyle and the products we use. However, the latter adds up to much unnecessary plastic waste, which we can also minimize using homemade teeth care products – toothpaste and mouthwash.

Mix a handful of sage leaves with a teaspoon of salt in around 100 ml of boiling water. Wait for the mixture to cool off and swish it in your mouth as you would usually do with regular, store-bought mouthwash. Another recipe everyone should try is grinding one teaspoon of salt, two teaspoons of baking soda, one tablespoon of powdered orange peel, and two teaspoons of dried sage together. You can, of course, add a little bit of peppermint essential oil to achieve that pleasant fresh smell usual toothpaste has, but bear in mind that you will need to add a few drops of water to the mixture to achieve the same or similar texture.

While homemade toothpaste and mouthwash are remarkable for their eco-friendliness, there are several other upsides to making these products on your own. First of all, one can control the ingredients and customize the texture, flavour, and abrasiveness. Still, most importantly, one majorly reduces their plastic consumption and cut costs on the shopping bills. However, we advise you to check with your dentist before making and using homemade teeth care products as some recipes may not fit your needs. 

Sparkling Clean Shine – Vinegar and Rosemary

One’s home is one’s castle, which needs to be defended from wrongdoers and various germs and bacteria. Wanting to keep our house clean and smelling fresh, we use many chemical products, which, while doing their job, are far from being natural and sometimes are the complete opposite of a pleasant smell. Besides, most chemicals come in plastic packaging, which cannot be recycled due to the products’ nature. To kill those germs and also fight plastic pollution, we invite you to make an all-natural, all-purpose cleaner spray, which would soon become your favourite!

Combine one part of white vinegar with one part water into a spray bottle, add several lemon rinds and rosemary springs. Once you are done with the preparation process, let the mixture infuse for at least a week before using it for the first time to clean your home. 

This cleaner will quickly solve many different problems around the house and clean those nasty water stains, various smudges, and much more – you will be thankful for our advice! Going outside and having more sunny days than before are associated precisely with spring. When greyish snowy clouds scatter, and the first flower blossoms show, you may know that you are about to spend a lot of time outdoors. Maybe you will be playing basketball with friends, riding your bike in the village, jogging in a park, walking a dog or quietly reading a book on a lakeshore – the spring is lovely for so many reasons that it would take too much time just to try and list them all. What unites these activities is fresh air and sunshine leading your every step and ensuring only the best emotions. However, every minute spent outdoors can be overshadowed by bright sun and heat. How can we prepare for it and face every adventure as bravely as could?

Some say they can sunbathe for hours and it would still not be enough, while for others, five minutes spent in the sun is already too much. Sunbathing, no matter how fun it may sound, is a very responsible activity because sun rays affect us and our skin even when the weather may look cloudy. To protect you from painful experiences, today we will talk about the sun and sunbathing's three significant problems – sunburn blisters, skin pigmentation, and heatstroke.

Why Little Sunburn Blisters Hurt So Much?

Rising temperatures mean more time spent in the fresh air and lighter and more comfortable clothing. Although winter or autumn clothing can also be comfortable, in the spring, we all enjoy wearing short-sleeved shirts; we start pulling dresses and skirts out of our closets and say goodbye to jackets and coats for at least half a year. No matter how much fun it is, this time also means that our skin will be more exposed to the sun, so the joyful moments outside can end up in unwanted tan lines, usually accompanied by painful sunburn blisters. 

Sunburns are pale-coloured blisters on the skin's surface that occur from a few hours to a day after sun exposure. Although it may not seem so scary, we start to feel pain around the burnt areas, which is difficult to bear after at least a day. We then struggle to find a comfortable position to sleep or sit; we experience pain while putting on clothing and having any other skin contact. After a while, the skin begins to peel off, and sunburns start to fade and heal. However, if the sunburn is more dangerous, it will be more painful – it means you will probably have watery blisters and bursting them can lead to an infection. In this situation, the healing process would be much more complicating, and there is a greater chance of having scars. 

It is essential to understand that sunburns are often accompanied by certain health complications – vomiting, pain, chills or fever, dizziness, and more. On the other hand, sunburns are relatively easy to prevent – more about this at the end of this blog!

How and Why our Skin Change Colour?

It is widely acceptable to distinguish people into several races by their skin colour. However, there are many different skin tones among more than seven billion humans – after all, even in cosmetic shops, we see many different tones to suit clients' needs. But now, let's ditch cosmetics and talk about something more serious. Intentional sunbathing and frequent visits to the solarium force our skin cells to produce more melanin – a natural skin pigment responsible for our eye and hair colours. Therefore, the more time we spend in the sun, the more melanin is produced and the more tanned we get. 

The overall process now seems quite simple; however, there are two different types of melanin. Eumelanin gives the skin so much wanted brown shade and tan, while pheomelanin production results in red burns and is far from what we would like. The oddities do not end here either, as after sunbathing, we can see different skin colour patches – pigmentation differences. One of the possible causes of skin pigmentation is the production of melanin, but in many cases, it can also mean the growth of bacteria, blood vessel changes, inflammation, etc. For this reason, it is essential to look at sunburns and skin discolouration responsible as more prominent and more noticeable pigmentation patches, for example, can mean a higher risk of getting cancer. 

We must mention that a change in body colour is more of a cosmetic thing than negatively affecting physical health, but it is always better to be safe than sorry.

How Does the Sun Penetrate our Bodies and Heads?

Staying in the fresh air and engaging in various activities is fun until we start to feel the harmful effects of heat and sun. One of the most relevant problems and, sadly, one of the least understood by society is heatstroke. People of all ages can experience a heatstroke, while considered the most dangerous for children, the elderly and those with heart problems. Heatstroke happens due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures, resulting in the body's inability to control its internal temperature. Elevated body temperature can lead to pain, dizziness, vomiting, disorientation, cramps, fainting and even a severe loss of consciousness. 

Heatstroke is not a simple problem like sunburns and blisters that can be solved on your own – once you feel the symptoms of a heat stroke, you should immediately end whatever you are doing and visit specialists. While it is quite a severe problem, it is relatively easy to recognize the upcoming threat and prevent it from happening. Symptoms of heatstroke include non-sweating despite high temperature, weaker and more dull breathing, muscles pain, etc. We have already mentioned that after having a heat stroke, the body is unable to control its internal temperature – due to that, our internal organs start to heat up and shut down. In general, not paying attention to the symptoms can be very painful and lead to complex and long-term health problems.

Nevertheless, it is pretty simple to avoid such things – one needs to drink more water, cover the head with a hat or a scarf, from time to time spend some time in shadows, and spend time outdoors when the sun is least active, in morning or afternoons. At noon the sun is at its highest point, so we feel the most extraordinary heat – we advise everyone to have a little siesta after eating lunch and plan activities in less sunny hours.

What's the Secret of Enjoying Sunshine?

From what we have told you today, it is easy to understand that the sun is both a positive and a negative thing. To enjoy its rays so that you do not regret it after, we must face it prepared. We already mentioned drinking loads of water and enjoying the sun in later hours, but in addition to all this, we need to take care of our skin as for it, the UV rays are the most damaging.

The skin needs to be taken care of before sunbathing, during, and after. Before spending time in the sun and wanting the most beautiful tan, dermatologists advise moisturizing the skin as much as possible because dehydrated skin is more exposed to UV rays. You may use creams and lotions to help restore and strengthen the protective layer of the skin. Secondly, you should exfoliate the skin to get rid of dead skin cells. However, it is important not to overdo it as the skin can become irritating – consult your cosmetician before the sunny season to have the most fantastic skincare products waiting to be used. Diving into adventures sounds like a lot of fun as you are excited to know where they would take you. On the other hand, sunburns and blisters are the exact opposite, and although extreme, the pain can be unbearable. To have a beautiful tan and avoid blisters' formation, you need to expose yourself to the sun progressively. Therefore, few shorter sessions are better than one long. At the same time, dermatologists advise smearing the skin with a high protection level sunscreen, which will lessen harmful UV rays and guarantee an even tan. Do not forget - it is better to hide in shadows from time to time than to lie in the sun all the time.

Last year we enjoyed neither the wintery weather, neither the frost nor cold temperatures. Even though the new year has just started, we already have been given loads of snow - it's easy to tell that 2021 will be better than the last year was! All we want to do now is run outside, make snow angels, snow fight, and go with the sledges from hills… 

However, we must not forget the seriousness of the outgoing situation and quarantine restrictions, so the only way to truly enjoy the winter is to do it safely. We are not only talking about maintaining a safe distance from other people but also taking care of yourself before going outside and once returned into a closed environment. As national lockdown turned our lives upside down, wintertime is a perfect season to get oneself back together and start exercising! The only question is how we are supposed to do it? Is it possible to harmonize both sports and winter?

When to Play Sports? – Winter vs. Other Seasons

No doubt, for some people winter is the most unlikeable season of the year and, in this case, their emotions are based on wintery weather conditions – wind, snowfall, cold, frost, etc. Here at Biomedicanna, we believe there is no such thing as bad weather – only failure to prepare for it. The goal to start exercising is probably one of the most popular New Year goals of all time – sadly, it means starting to exercise despite winter conditions. One can always exercise at home – now it’s quite easy to turn an unused room into a private gym but, of course, a yoga mat in the middle of the living room is still a great idea. For those who associate the good physical form with professional sports equipment, the gym is true salvation. We now have been under quarantine restrictions for almost a year, thus our lives are limited within the scope of four walls. Of course, national lockdown does have some advantages – more time for us, and for the family, time for our hobbies and new things, new pets and new tasty home-made dishes, etc. On the other hand, we haven’t seen our friends eye-to-eye for a long time, we had to celebrate the biggest celebrations alone, and some people even lost their jobs due to the ongoing pandemic. 

The situation is far from perfect, and the worst thing that it does not come alone – it brought us depression, anxiety, and overall sadness… Forced closure changes not only our souls but also our appearance, and, sadly, our sensitive skin suffers the most. How can we improve our skin’s wellbeing and overall beauty? What methods work best to recover damaged and irritated skin?

Skin’s Secrets – Things You Did and Didn’t Know Before

Skin is no doubt the most exposed organ of our bodies – and the biggest as well! Around two square meters of flesh performs several functions: it protects us and our internal parts from physical threats, thus acting as an immunity shield; it regulates the internal temperature and cools the body by protecting it against overheating; it allows us to sense everything around us by containing a sizable network of nerve cells. Significant skin functions evolved so that humans – and animals – could fully function in an unpredictable world. Speaking of evolution, it did not spare our skin change - modern human predecessors are known to be covered in hair from head to toe. Now, enough though our whole skin surface is still covered with hairs, some are very tiny and almost invisible for a naked eye – hair eventually started to lose its heating need as the climate got warmer.
