It’s a Jingle Bell time! It is a universal and well-known fact that Santa Claus brings gifts only to those who are nice and brings nothing to those who have been naughty throughout the year. However, Christmas itself is far from being universal as different traditions are other conditions draw a Christmas picture in completely different colours. Despite differences, holiday cheer and positive emotions fill the homes and hearts of billions of people, but how exactly they celebrate? We at Biomedicanna have decided to borrow the sled from Santa Claus and go around the world to see for our very eyes that differences unite and not separate!
Crazy Christmas Calendars
If you take a closer look at the calendar, you will see that Christmas happens twice – once in December and at the very beginning of the year. How is that even possible, you will say – well, it’s crazy when it comes to the calendars… Of course, it would be very convenient for all of the world to use the same measuring systems, but life would then be boring. There are two Christian calendars used worldwide and both of them actually counts days differently – the Gregorian calendar celebrates Christmas on the 25th of December, and people who use the Julian calendar celebrate on the 6th or 7th of January. It is clear which one is more popular as the latter is mostly used in Orthodox countries – Russia, Belarus, Georgia, Serbia, Ukraine, and others. Such a difference causes some issues from time to time, but – hey! – double the Christmas, double the gifts, right?

Christmas Weather Forecast
Have you ever wondered why almost all Christmas songs mention ‘dashing through the snow,’ ‘snowin’ and blowin’ up bushels of fun,’ or ‘snow is falling all around me?’ It is quite obvious – no matter the calendar, Christmas happens in winter, and traditional winter involves a lot of snow. However, that is not the case for almost half of the world – the southern hemisphere, to be exact. In countries like Australia, New Zealand, Bolivia, South Africa, Madagascar, and Argentina, seasons are switched together, so instead of winter, they have a warm and sunny summer season. That means that you can escape cold weather and spend Christmas decorating the palm tree with baubles, lying on the beach and sunbathing, so it’s up to you to make the right decision when packing a suitcase for the winter holiday!
Unconventional Christmas Traditions
Most of the Christmas traditions involve family gathering from near and far to sit together at one big table. This year such a gathering becomes a bit impossible, so let’s not talk about this tradition – there are many other ways to make a holiday exceptional! For example, people from Brasilia and Portugal eat their Christmas Eve dinner very late in the evening and change gifts with each other as the clock struck midnight. Polish people always leave at least one seat at the Christmas table free to serve uninvited guests; besides, families share one religious wafer and pray while it is being eaten. Finish families eat porridge with cinnamon on Christmas morning – they usually hide an almond in one of the portions, and the one who is lucky enough to find it will have the best next year. As crazy as it might sound, Japanese people have the weirdest Christmas tradition out of all – they celebrate this Western holiday by eating fried chicken in one of the most famous fast-food restaurants. Despite surprising traditions, Christmas is Christmas all around the world!

Tastiest Christmas Ever
No one will dare to argue about the tasty side of Christmas – food is one of the most important attributes of this celebration. For us, Christmas smells and tastes like juicy tangerines, hot wine with spices, turkey, potato salad, pudding, fruitcake, and many more – just thinking about those foods makes our mouths water! Each of the countries has somewhat unique dishes to put on the Christmas table, yet it would take hours and hours to mention only a small fraction of them! However, there is one dessert that all people love as it is fun to both prepare and to devour – gingerbread! Yes, each person’s taste is different, yet before Christmas, families all around the world gather in their kitchen, bake, and decorate gingerbread with a glaze of all colours! Here at Biomedicanna we cannot imagine any other food that would be as much Christmassy as gingerbread houses, so allow us to give you some advice – always build two gingerbread houses as it is incredibly hard to resist eating it before the 25th of December!
The Prettiest Christmas
Once Halloween is over, every shopping centre and online store starts to put up their Christmas decorations, play festive songs, and invite you for a fairy-tale-like Christmas shopping experience, and every little bit of detail there is amazingly pretty! We understand that the beauty of sparkling garlands, shiny baubles, and inflatable garden decorations come with a certain price, which can easily scare everyone’s wallets, yet some people will spend HUGE amounts of money to decorate their homes with thousands of lights! Several years ago, one family from the USA made it to the Guinness World Record book as they decorated their home with more than 600 thousand lights – the décor was outstanding, and so was the electricity bill! However, it is no secret that more and more people each year decide to reuse materials and later craft them into handmade Christmas decorations – we encourage everyone to contribute to a more beautiful and cleaner future and cosier Christmas!
